How DoorDash taxes work

Dashers are independent contractors, not employees — DoorDash sends you a 1099-NEC if you earned $600+ and withholds nothing. You pay two federal taxes on your profit (earnings minus deductions): 15.3% self-employment tax and regular income tax at your bracket. Tips are fully taxable, and if you expect to owe $1,000+ you're supposed to pay quarterly estimated taxes, not one lump in April.

The mileage deduction is your biggest weapon

For 2026, the IRS lets you deduct 72.5 cents per business mile from January–June and 76 cents from July–December — the IRS raised the rate mid-year for higher fuel prices. Drive 15,000 miles dashing and that's roughly an $11,100 deduction that most new Dashers under-claim because they didn't track miles. Every mile from accepting an order to drop-off counts, plus miles between orders while active on the app. Use a mileage tracker from day one — it's the difference between a painful tax bill and a manageable one.

Also deductible: hot bags and cargo gear, the business-use share of your phone plan, tolls and parking during deliveries, and roadside assistance memberships. You can claim these and the standard deduction on your personal return — business deductions are separate.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I set aside for taxes from DoorDash?

A good rule is 25–30% of your net profit (after the mileage deduction). Because the mileage deduction is so large, that often works out to only 10–15% of your gross earnings.

Does DoorDash report my earnings to the IRS?

Yes — DoorDash files your 1099-NEC with the IRS once you earn $600+, so the IRS already knows the number. You must report the income even if you never receive the form.

Are tips from DoorDash taxable?

Yes, fully. Tips paid through the app are included in your 1099-NEC; cash tips must be added yourself.

Can I deduct miles driving to my dashing zone?

Miles driven with the app on and while completing deliveries are the defensible ones. Keep a log — the IRS can disallow estimates with no records.

Do I pay taxes if I made under $600 dashing?

You won't get a 1099, but the income is still legally taxable. Self-employment tax kicks in from $400 of net self-employment profit.
