UK VAT — Frequently Asked Questions
How do I register for VAT?
You register online with HMRC to receive your VAT number. Registration is mandatory once your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, and voluntary below that (often worthwhile to reclaim VAT on costs). We handle VAT registration end to end, usually within a few working days.
What is the current UK VAT rate?
The standard UK VAT rate is 20%. A reduced rate of 5% applies to items like home energy, and a zero rate applies to most food and children’s clothing. Which rate applies to your sales depends on what you sell — we’ll map your products to the right rates.
How do I pay VAT to HMRC?
VAT is paid electronically — usually by direct debit or bank transfer — after each VAT return is filed through Making Tax Digital software. Payment is due one calendar month and seven days after the end of your VAT period. We file your returns and remind you before every payment date.
Can I deregister for VAT?
Yes — if your taxable turnover falls below the deregistration threshold (£88,000) or you stop trading, you can apply to cancel your VAT registration. We’ll assess whether deregistering actually saves you money before you decide, and handle the paperwork if it does.
