Is a federal tax ID the same as an EIN?
For businesses, yes — the federal tax ID is the Employer Identification Number (EIN), a nine-digit number the IRS uses to identify your business. Individuals instead use an SSN or ITIN. If a form asks for your business’s federal tax ID, it means your EIN.
How do I get an EIN or tax ID number?
You apply to the IRS with Form SS-4. US residents with an SSN can apply online; non-US residents without an SSN must apply by phone or fax, which is where most applications go wrong. We prepare and file it correctly for you — EINs from $15, including for non-residents.
Where can I find my federal tax ID (EIN) if I lost it?
Check your original IRS CP-575 confirmation letter, past tax returns, or bank paperwork. If it’s truly lost, the IRS can issue a 147C verification letter — a service we handle as part of our EIN packages.
