Sole Trader — Frequently Asked Questions
How do I register as a sole trader?
You register as self-employed with HMRC for Self Assessment — this must be done by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started trading. HMRC issues your UTR number, and from then on you file a tax return each year. We can register you and handle every return after that.
How much tax does a sole trader pay?
Sole traders pay income tax on profits above the personal allowance, plus Class 4 National Insurance. The exact amount depends on your profit level — use our free UK tax calculator for an instant estimate, or ask us for a personal projection.
Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
It depends on your profit, risk and growth plans — limited companies can be more tax-efficient at higher profits but come with more admin. Try our free Limited Company vs Sole Trader calculator to compare take-home pay, or talk to us for tailored advice.
What records does a sole trader need to keep?
You must keep records of all business income and expenses, and keep them for at least 5 years after the 31 January filing deadline. Simple bookkeeping software or spreadsheets are fine — our bookkeeping service (or our templates) keeps this effortless.
